Get your CV to the right person

Submitting or sending your CV is still the most popular and obvious way of applying for a position with a company. But you need to ensure that your CV reaches the right person and is remembered by that person. Before we consider the different channels you can use, we need to mention a very important point: Only send what was requested in the advert. Do not send any unnecessary documentation - it will look like you cannot read or follow instructions.

1. Posting: Ensure that you send your CV in an A4 envelope and that you address it to the correct person. If you have the information then try and use the person's name and surname, correct job title and department on the envelope. Some companies are massive and there are more than a few people with the same surname. Wait about a week and phone to confirm that your CV was received. Use the opportunity to ask whether the person needs anything else from you at this stage.

2. Email: Send it to the right person and ask for the receiver to confirm that they have received it. Reply to their confirmation and thank them for taking the time to read your CV and ask whether they need anything else from you at this stage.

3. Faxing: Always confirm that your fax was received in a legible condition. Try and follow a faxed email up with a posted one.

4. Delivering in person: If you have the opportunity to deliver your CV in person you need to make sure that you are presentable. Place your CV in an envelope and address it to the correct person. This is important as they might be out and you will have to leave it with a colleague or a receptionist. However, if the person is available you have a valuable opportunity to make a good impression. Thank them for the opportunity and indicate that you would really like to work with the company. You can send an email the next day to thank them for making time to see you.

Now the big wait starts - only phone for feedback about a week after the closing date on the advert. Use this period to familiarise yourself with the company (the internet is a great source) and start preparing for your interview.

Good luck!
